Safety Information
In line with Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (GPSR), the following safety rules apply to starter brushes and bendix assemblies used in forklifts.
Application
Starter brushes conduct current to the armature. The bendix (one-way clutch) engages the starter with the flywheel only during cranking. Together, they enable engine starting.
Hazards
- Electric shock risk when working without power disconnected.
- Sparking and overheating due to worn brushes or poor contact.
- Damage to the starter or wiring from incorrect fitment or specification.
- Fire risk from short circuits, burnt contacts, or loose connections.
Precautions
- Perform all work with engine off and power isolated.
- Use components that meet the vehicle/starter manufacturer’s specs.
- Check brush length, spring pressure, and commutator condition.
- Inspect bendix for play, smooth operation, and proper freewheel.
- Protect components from moisture, dust, and contaminants.
Maintenance
- Periodically clean the commutator and brush holders.
- Replace brushes at minimum length or if excessive sparking occurs.
- Replace bendix when teeth are worn, it slips, or becomes noisy.
Disposal
Send metal parts to scrap collection; dispose of electrical/electronic components as WEEE according to local regulations.
