Do you need a truck-mounted pallet truck? Wondering how to choose a model that will move efficiently in a confined space, yet be lightweight and stable? Fortunately, there is plenty to choose from, but before we suggest specific models, let us explain how a truck and trailer pallet truck should differ from a warehouse pallet truck.

Lightweight

The first important feature of a truck-mounted pallet truck is its lightness. Hand pallet trucks usually weigh 60-90 kg. For semi-trailer work, it is better to choose models weighing around 70 kg and with a solid, robust construction. This will ensure that the trolley remains stable while not being easy to manoeuvre.

Trolley with short forks

The standard fork length is 1150 mm and for some truck pallet trucks this will work well. However, sometimes short forks of 800 or 1000 mm are a better solution. It all depends on the amount of space and the size of the pallets. With larger formats, short forks may provide too little stability.

High manoeuvrability, i.e. small turning radius

Narrow aisles are a challenge for pallet truck operators. To make manoeuvring easier, it is advisable to choose pallet trucks with a small turning radius. Here again, manual pallet trucks have an advantage over electric ones. The turning radius of the former is between 1300-1500 mm, while that of the latter is already 1500-1600 mm.

Vertical drawbar operation

When space is really tight and every centimetre counts, pallet truck models that allow steering with the drawbar positioned vertically are a real lifesaver. This feature is only available on some electric pallet trucks, but is not found on manual models.

Better electric or hand pallet truck?

If the forklift is to be used to transport loads of up to 2.5 t in really small spaces, a hand pallet truck will probably suffice. For daily long-term use and the constant need to transport loads, perhaps an electric pallet truck will prove to be a better solution. The final decision is best made by analysing the conditions and the length of time the machine has been in use at a particular company.

Electric pallet trucks for semi-trailers - our suggestions

It has a turning radius of 1360 mm, a load capacity of 1500 kg, forks of 1150 mm, a practical Li-ION battery, is fully electrified and can be driven with the drawbar in the upright position (in turtle walk mode). The F4 is small, agile and weighs just 120 kg. For frequent use and transporting loads of up to 1.5t it will prove ideal.
